Restoration of The Merlion Statue

Location: Merlion Park, Singapore

History: The Merlion is an iconic feature of Singapore designed by Kwan Sai Kheong and Lim Nang Seng, it was first unveiled to the public in September 1972. Constructed with metal reinforcement and finished with Shanghai Plaster coating, gave it a unique finish. Having shifted once from its original position (opposite side of Esplanade Bridge), it is a must-see for tourists visiting Singapore.

Work Scope: MAEK Consulting was appointed to conduct a condition survey of the Merlion, to determine the existing condition and the required works for the restoration. Infra-Red Thermography, Ground Penetrating Radar, Karsten Tube measurement were used to complement the visual survey conducted. Suitable protective coatings were evaluated with the aim of minimizing maintenance and cleaning of the structure.
