Petrography is one type of microscopic study for minerals. This technique could be used to characterize mineral based building materials, such as plaster/render, mortar, ceramic, stone, and etc. This involves detailed microscopic examination using polarizing fluorescent microscope on the thin sections made, in order to establish material composition and possible failure mechanism of the studied samples.
